How to Get Paid Faster as a Freelancer

Getting paid on time is one of the biggest challenges for freelancers. Here are proven strategies that actually work.

Set clear payment terms upfront. Before you start work, agree on payment terms in writing. Net 15 is standard for freelancers. Net 30 is common for larger clients. "Due upon receipt" sounds good but gives clients no deadline to prioritize.

Invoice immediately. The day you finish the work (or reach a milestone), send the invoice. Every day you delay sending is a day added to your payment timeline. norabooks lets you create and send invoices in under 2 minutes.

Make it easy to pay. Include your e-transfer email, bank transfer details, or payment link directly on the invoice. The fewer steps between "I should pay this" and "it's paid," the faster you get your money.

Follow up on day one. If the payment is due on March 15 and it's March 16, send a polite reminder. Most late payments aren't intentional. They're forgetful. A simple "Just a friendly reminder that invoice #042 was due yesterday" is enough.

Consider milestone billing. For large projects, billing in installments (30% upfront, 40% at midpoint, 30% on completion) reduces your risk and keeps cash flowing throughout the project.

Use norabooks to track payment status. See which invoices are paid, pending, or overdue at a glance. Send reminders with one click. Never wonder where your money is.
